Mathewson, having been enamored with the "Back to the Future" films during the 1980s, set out to meet Lewis, who is featured prominently on the film's soundtrack. The two became fast friends and, with the aid of Mathewson's mysterious time machine, traveled to many different eras. Reportedly, Lewis went by the nickname "Rufus Lewis" while Mathewson was called "Lord Protector," or, sometimes, "Ted." One of the more notable time-traveling trips Lewis took with Mathewson occurred in the late 1980s. Having heard and Ray Parker Jr.'s theme song for "Ghostbusters," Lewis and Mathewson decided to play an elaborate practical joke. They went back in time on a lark, whereupon Lewis wrote "I Want a New Drug," using many similar notes and progressions. Lewis then sued Parker Jr. for copyright violation (Mathewson wrote the brief to save on court costs, appropriating much from his suit against George Lucas; some parts of the brief even contained baseless allegations against Lucas), eventually settling out of court. Lewis then later blew all of the money on retrofitting a DeLorean with similar technology from Mathewson's time machine.
