Jacques Derrida (1930 - 2004) was a famous literary critic and scholar, founder of deconstructionism, and notorious non-joiner who, with Henry David Thoreau, was one of the intellectuals connected to the STAL Movement. In JUOD circles, Derrida is most famous for being the subject of many attacks in The Leviathan Chronicles, one of the many volumes of The Verities of Joining by Harley P. Mathewson.

Death

Allegedly, Mathewson had some hand in his death, though he has never been charged. Mathewson visited Derrida while he was writing, gave him The Proposition, and when Derrida tried to explain that there really wasn't a difference between joining and dying, Mathewson said, "Oh really?" and beat Derrida half to death with a dictionary asking him if he was really even "beating" him. Derrida then later died of pancreatic cancer that year on October 8, 2004, possibly hastened by Mathewson's beating (there was some talk it was radioactive). Mathewson continues to hold a public celebration of Derrida's death on each October 8th, consistently emphasizing that it was not a celebration of his life.

Mathewson's Quips

Mathewson has often mentioned Derrida in passing in his various poetic novellas, at odd times during interviews, and in some blog posts. A few examples:

  • "You all hear about this theory of 'play' that Douchida is talking about? Yeah, he's talking 'playing' with little boys."
  • "So Jacques has this new book called 'Of Grammatology.' It's a sequel to his bestseller 'Of Faggotry.' "
  • "Deconstruction makes about as much sense as not allowing gays to marry. While we're on the topic of gays and deconstructionism, how about Jacque-Dudes-Off Derrida?"
