Sass
From JUOD
Sass is any act, spoken or otherwise, that is deemed to be impudent or insolent by a joiner. Sass is considered to be a reversible grievous act against the JUOD Movement. There is a grace period after sass has been committed wherein the sasser can pledge to bake a pie for the joiner that she has just recently offended. The joiner that was sassed has the right to specify the flavor of pie, whether it be hot or cold, and depending on the severity of the sass, the quantity of pies necessary to atone for her sass.
Sass in New Canadianese
Sass is a loanword from New Canadianese, and is the only one that appears in most English dictionaries. The term first appeared in the English edition of The Verities of Joining in the 1930s. Philologists theorize that Harley P. Mathewson, the creator of New Candianese, considered sass too great a threat to his growing movement to attempt a translation—he wanted its meaning to be universal.
Original Sass
A common belief of all Mathewsonism groups is the concept of Original Sass. Joinists hold that at conception, every soul is tainted with sass. This original sass can only be overcome through the healing power of joining... or lots and lots of pie. For this reason, Joinist mothers usually bake a "proxy pie" for newborn infants, especially girls. Then, when she is old enough to bake her own pies, she can accept The Proposition and formally join.
