The Dodo Bird has also been named by Harley P. Mathewson as one of the classic non-joiners. With its very name, the Dodo conjures up thoughts of the dumb kid in grade school that everyone knew was doomed to fail, but was required by law to be present and dumb-down the class. The Dodo is also a famous example of a species that rapidly became extinct once contacted by Man. Mathewson summed up the story of the Dodo by saying, "the Dodo is extinct, meaning that every member of the species is dead. This can only mean that the species chose as a whole not to join, and thus, died." It has been noted that Mathewson supports extinction for all animal non-joiners.
